Change in autumn — when and why are the clocks changed?

As autumn arrives, Estonia once again reaches the moment when the clocks must be adjusted — the traditional switch to winter time. Although the European Union has been discussing the elimination of seasonal time changes for years, no final decision has been made yet. Therefore, the time change will still take place in 2025.

When Will the Time Be Changed in Autumn 2025?

This year, the time change will occur on the night of Sunday, October 26, 2025, exactly at 4:00 AM — the clocks will be set back by one hour, from 4:00 → 3:00.
This means we get one extra hour of sleep, but evenings will become darker much earlier.

Why Is the Time Changed at All?

The concept of time change originated in the early 20th century to save energy and make the most of daylight. Today, the energy-saving argument has become less relevant, but the system remains in place due to habit and international consistency.
Time change affects work and school schedules, public transport, technical systems, and even our biological rhythm. Many people experience sleepiness, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating after the change — the body usually needs a couple of days to adapt.

How to Adapt More Easily to the Time Change?

To make the transition smoother, try the following a few days in advance:

  • go to sleep and wake up 15–20 minutes earlier,
  • avoid screen time late in the evening,
  • spend time outdoors in the morning,
  • eat and drink lighter than usual in the evening.

Small adjustments help the body adapt faster, so autumn fatigue won’t disrupt your plans.

Autumn — a Good Time to Bring Balance to Your Finances

The time change can also be a symbolic moment to reflect on your daily time and financial management. Just like a clock, a personal financial plan sometimes needs recalibration.
